What "Research Use Only" Really Means
Every LOCKED product ships labeled Research Use Only. Here's what that designation means, why it exists, and the responsibilities it places on the researcher who orders.

They are not drugs, foods, dietary supplements, cosmetics, or medical devices, are not for human or animal consumption, and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. LOCKED makes no medical, therapeutic, or performance claims. The purchaser is solely responsible for compliance with all applicable laws and for lawful use.
The phrase Research Use Only — RUO — appears on every LOCKED label, every product page, and every certificate we issue. It is not marketing language and it is not a disclaimer added for convenience. It is a regulatory classification that defines what a material is, how it may be handled, and who is accountable for its use.
A classification, not a claim
An RUO material is intended solely for laboratory research. It has not been evaluated by the FDA, it is not a drug, food, dietary supplement, cosmetic, or medical device, and it carries no approval for use in or on humans or animals. Critically, an RUO designation makes no statement about safety or effect in any living system. It describes the intended setting — the bench, the assay, the controlled experiment — and nothing beyond it.
This is why you will never see LOCKED describe what a compound "does" in a person. Doing so would convert a research material into an unapproved product making health claims, which is precisely what the RUO boundary exists to prevent.
Why the boundary matters
Research-grade compounds are produced, tested, and documented to a laboratory standard. That standard is rigorous on the axes that matter for research — identity, purity, and traceability — but it is a different framework from the one that governs approved therapeutics. Keeping the two separate protects everyone: it keeps research supply honest about what it is, and it keeps unverified claims out of the conversation.
What it asks of the researcher
Ordering an RUO material carries responsibilities:
- Use the material only in an appropriate research context.
- Comply with all applicable institutional, local, and national regulations.
- Handle, store, and dispose of compounds according to sound laboratory practice.
- Never represent an RUO material as suitable for human or veterinary use.
The purchaser is solely responsible for ensuring their use is lawful and appropriate.
How LOCKED supports the standard
What we can do — and what we hold ourselves to — is prove exactly what is in the vial. That is the appropriate role for a research supplier: not to make claims about outcomes, but to document identity and purity beyond doubt.
